The Alexandrite is an overdrive designed around the Nutube fluorescent display vacuum tube that operates just like a triode vacuum tube. No clipping diodes. The "overdrive" is created by driving both sides of the Nutube to get "tube" compression, touch, and sound.
Look no further to get your "tube" overdrive. No diodes in this overdrive. No overdriven jfets or distorting op amps. This overdrive follows standard tube amp topology: two band tone stack followed by a preamp into the Nutube "power tube" stage where both sides are separately pushed and then mixed back together into the volume control/output stage. Vintage low-gain overdrive. Get nice compression and cut-through the mix tones below 12:00 on the gain. Over that get nice pushed amp to all out overdrive (ranges vary depending on how hot the pickups on the guitar are.

Sound Demos
All recordings using a Crate V30 tube amp with reverb. Guitars used: American STandard Strat with L. Fralin single coil pickups and LP Standard with burstbuckers. Used a JHS Little Black Buffer to drive the long cable used to the amp. Recorded on Pro Tools without any effects or mixing. Used an SM57 to close mic the combo.
Recording 1 - Crunch: Strat (bridge). Alexandrite with Gain at 2:30. Starts clean then at 11 seconds switches to the Alexandrite. At around 23 seconds switches to clean again and then engages Alexandrite at 33 seconds.
Recording 2 - Crunch Blues: Strat (neck). Clean then Alexandrite with Gain at 2:30 and eq set a little darker.
Recording 3 - Full Gain: Strat (bridge). Clean then Alexandrite at full gain setting.
Recording 4 - Single Notes: Strat (neck). Clean then Alexandrite with Gain at 12:00. This demonstrate the mild "tube" compression and sonic enhancement the Alexandrite provides to make the notes pop and cut through the mix.
Recording 5 - Comparison: Strat (bridge). Starts with another company's (boutique) TS style op amp diode clipping low gain (transparent) overdrive pedal to establish a base point for comparison. When you hear the "click" that's when switches to the Alexandrite at full Gain setting.
Recording 6 - Crunch (Humbuckers): LP (bridge). Starts clean then Alexandrite (around 17 seconds) with Gain at 12:00.
Recording 7 - More Gain (Humbuckers): LP (bridge). Starts clean then Alexandrite with Gain at 3:00.
Recording 8 - Full Gain (Humbuckers). LP (bridge). Alexandrite at highest gain setting demonstrating the touch sensitivity of this pedal and the roar it is capable of producing. Alexandrite is on the entire demo and picking style is how levels of gain are obtained.
